Dr Anne-Meike Fechter

Biography

Meike Fechter joined Sussex University in 2003, having taught at the University of Wales, Lampeter, before that. She completed a degree in History and German Linguistics/Literature at the University of Tuebingen, Germany (1996), an M.A. in Social Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London (1997), and a PhD in Social Anthropology at the University of Hull (2002).

Meike has recently published outputs from a research project, funded by the ESRC, on 'Aid Workers as Mobile Professionals', in Cambodia and the UK. This includes a book entitled 'Inside the Everyday Lives of Development Workers: the Futures and Challenges of Aidland' http://www.styluspub.com/clients/kum/books/BookDetail.aspx?productID=218991 and a Special Issue of the journal Third World Quarterly on 'The Personal and the Professional in Aid Work' http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/ctwq20/33/8).

Between 1999-2000 and in 2002, Meike carried out doctoral research among corporate expatriates who are posted to developing countries. The resulting monograph, entitled 'Transnational Lives: Expatriates in Jakarta, Indonesia', analyses Euro-Americans working in Jakarta within a framework of transnationalism and globalisation.
