Teaching

Mary has received numerous awards for her teaching including two Teaching Excellence awards at Sussex University, a teaching award from Cornish College of the Arts (USA) and awards from other institutions. She has also received funding to develop digital resources to support creative pedagogy in media practice. Mary devised and lead the development of the first virtual learning environments in MFM (The Creative Practice VLE). She also developed mechanisms for the inclusion of maker-space-based teaching on modules in MFM as early as 2007.

Supporting Students in Developing Their Own Creative Work:

Mary supervises PhD students in Creative & Critical Practice and Digital Media. She also supervises MA projects, placements and dissertations in those areas. She regularly advises students working with digital media, interactive documentary and animation in the final year of the BA Media Production as they develop their major projects. A key goal with each of those is supporting students to identify and develop their own creative voice.

Interdisciplinary Teaching:

Mary regularly teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate modules across the creative and critical practice areas. She has also taught and lectured on core modules in the Media Studies and Film Studies subject areas as well. Beyond Sussex, Mary has taught across art & design courses in the USA.

Mary has convened the BA Media Practice and the MA Digital Media degrees and has helped to write and launch new BA and MA degrees at Sussex.
