I completed my PhD in Social Psychology at the University of Surrey in 2000. I have worked at University of Sussex since 2001, where I am currently Reader in Social Psychology.

My research focuses on how people construct, maintain and defend their identities in different cultural contexts, using both state-of-the-art quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.

I founded and lead the Culture and Identity Research Network, a global team of researchers working in more than 30 nations on all inhabited continents.

I have authored or co-authored more than 60 journal articles and book chapters. I am co-editor of the Handbook of Identity Theory and Research, and co-author of Understanding Social Psychology Across Cultures.

I served as joint Chief Editor of the European Journal of Social Psychology from 2015 to 2018.

My teaching focuses on self and identity processes, cross-cultural psychology, and advanced research methods.

Nine of my former PhD students now work in academic positions worldwide.

I am currently serving as Chair of the School of Psychology Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
