Role
Duncan is a Senior Lecturer in Education, the PGCE Leader and PGCE Secondary Music Curricuum Tutor. He came to Sussex following 18 years teaching in secondary education. In 2005 he was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the HE Academy.
As well as leading the PGCE and his curriculum role at Sussex, Duncan's main interests are in the integration, application and development of ICT in education, and particularly, music. This has involved him in delivering workshops and training courses for many teachers, in addition to developing resources. He has also been involved in developing music specific AfL materials published by the DfES.
Duncan has developed the use of the Virtual Learning Environment on the PGCE course, to support students more effectively and develop their own learning. He is interested in the use and implementation of ePortfolios and has developed a simple, portable USB drive version, specifically for use by trainee teachers. He is now completing work on a design and model with the potential for use with trainees, Newly Qualified Teachers and other students.
In 2004, Duncan received a university Teaching Award and in September 2005 he was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in recognition for excellence in teaching.
In the last couple of years he has become increasingly involved in researching spirituality in music education and in particular, with teachers in the music classroom. He also contributes to music education magazines.
