Cherith's doctoral research, at The Queen's University of Belfast, was concerned with environmental and climatic controls on limestone landforms and landscape development. Before joining Sussex she has been a Visiting Research Fellow at the Australian National University and lecturer at the University of Brighton. During her time at Sussex she has also been a Visiting Academic in the Institute of Marine and Limnological Studies at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

Cherith's research lies broadly within the study of landform development and landscape evolution and focuses on (i) rock weathering and building stone decay and (ii) coastal processes.
Cherith's research is funded by a variety of organisations including the Environment Agency, the European Union and Defra. Her recently completed research projects include:
- Beaches At Risk (BAR) EU funded

- Sediment Transport in the Ouse-Newhaven Estuary (STONE) EA funded
- Beach Erosion in the Rives Manche (BERM) EU funded
On the EU funded European Shore Platform Erosion Dynamics (ESPED) Cherith led the Geotechnical work package.
Recently completed DPhil students supervised by Cherith include:
Richard Charman 2007 The hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics of the Sussex Ouse Estuary, UK
Jerome Curoy 2011 Longshore transport on natural and managed mixed beaches of the eastern Channel coasts.
