UK/ITALY: British Council/Italian Collaboration. Subject areas are: photonics and new materials; ageing of populations: social and medical aspects; marine sciences: land, estuary and coastal interactions; engineering: eco-design for urban environment and work place. Deadline: 15 July 1997

JOSEPH ROWNTREE FOUNDATION YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILIES RESEARCH COMMITTEE: proposals invited for a new programme of research and development concerning young people. Deadline 5 September 1997.

EPSRC INDUSTRIAL CASE AWARDS: in this scheme, the companies are free to define their own projects, within the remit of the EPSRC, to seek out academic collaborators of their choice. Deadline: 31 July 1997.

EMBO FELLOWSHIPS: The European Molecular Biology Organisation is inviting applications for its short term fellowships; plenary lectures; short visits from Eastern European countries; and practical workshops. Deadline: 1 September 1997.

HUMAN FRONTIER SCIENCE PROGRAMME: applications invited for research grants, workshops and fellowships. The aim of the HESP is to promote, through international collaboration, basic research to elucidate the complex mechanisms of living organisms, including man. Deadlines: for research grants and long-term fellowships - 1 September 1997. For short-term fellowships and workshops throughout the year.

WELLCOME INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIPS: applications invited from postdoctoral research workers for the award of the first round of the Wellcome International Prize Travelling Research Fellowships, to be taken in 1998. Deadline: 8 September 1997.

EPSRC MATHEMATICS FOR IT: applications invited for their mathematics and information technology initiative which will support research proposals and visiting fellowships. Deadline 10 October 1997.[Research Fortnight 14 May 97]

UK/JAPAN: applications invited for collaborative research project awards to cover UK/Japanese exchange visits in support of research in science, engineering, technology, agriculture and medicine. Deadline: 1 December 1997.[Research Fortnight 14 May 97]

WELLCOME TRUST HUMAN POPULATION GRANTS: applications invited for project and programme grant support for innovative research on issues relating to human population. No deadline.[Research Fortnight 14 May 97]

CASE AWARDS FOR NEW ACADEMIC APPOINTEES: applications invited. Any appointee to an academic post on or after 1 April 1997 may apply for a CASE award under this scheme providing that the EPSRC's criteria are met. Nominations at any time.[Research Fortnight 14 May 97]
