First class
Professor Margaret Boden,
philosopher and cognitive scientist in COGS, was awarded an honorary DSc by the
University of Bristol on 13 Feburary.
Professor Graham Davey (COGS) has
been elected as President of the British Psychological Society (BPS). With over
34,000 members, the BPS is the representative body for psychologists and
psychology in the UK.
A Sussex graduate has been appointed
Governor of the British Virgin Islands. Tom Macan was president of the
Students' Union from 1967 to 1968 after completing an Economics degree in SOC.
Since joining the Diplomatic Service in 1969, he has been posted to embassies
in Bonn, Brasilia, Lisbon and Vilnius. Currently Deputy High Commissioner in
New Delhi, Tom will take over the Governor’s post in October.
Professor Leon Mestel FRS,
Emeritus Professor of Astronomy in CPES, has been awarded the 2002 astronomical
Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. This is the highest award given
by the Society and recognises a lifetime's achievement in research.
