Steven Spielberg, DLitt
Film-maker Steven Spielberg is to receive an honorary degree at the summer graduation ceremony on l5 July. He is being awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a film-maker, his contribution to international understanding and for his support for the University's Centre for German-Jewish Studies. Last year, the Righteous Persons Foundation, of which Mr Spielberg is the founder, donated $100,000 to the Centre; part of the proceeds from the widely- acclaimed film Schindler's List. Steven Spielberg will receive the honorary degree at the morning ceremony. Sydney Kentridge, South African defence lawyer and former Judge of the Courts of Appeal of Jersey and Guernsey will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws at the same ceremony. In the afternoon Dr Johnnetta Betsch Cole, President of Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters and Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Astronomer and Professor of Physics at the Open University, the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. | |
