Vote on VC The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alasdair Smith, described this month's student vote of no-confidence in him as "a clever piece of electioneering by some of the candidates standing for election as Students' Union officers". He added: "Last year, the University conducted a major review of my position, which included widespread consultation. Following this process, the University's governing body decided to renew my appointment. My views on the funding of higher education were known then and students had every opportunity to respond."
USSU funding The Students' Union claims that it has run out of money and is threatening to shut down its services next week (beginning 25 February). However, the USSU executive met with senior managers this week and Professor Alasdair Smith, Vice-Chancellor, said: "The meeting was in a very positive spirit. We're very pleased with progress made over issues of funding. The Union has presented us with detailed proposals which we are now studying."
