Mike joins the ILT tribe

mikeDr Mike Tribe (CPES) has become one of the University's first full members of the Institute of Teaching and Learning (ILT), which was established as a result of recommendations by the Dearing Report into Higher Education. The principal aims and objectives of the ILT are:

  • to enhance the status of teaching in higher education
  • to maintain and improve the quality of learning and teaching in higher education
  • to set standards of good professional practice that its members, and in due course all those with learning and teaching responsibilities, might follow.

Mike, who won an Alumni Society Teaching Award in 1999, has been instrumental in the University's programme of preparation for membership of the ILT. Last year, Pat Drake (USIE) was on a working party to develop a programme of training and support for new members of faculty who are new to teaching, with a view to their joining the ILT.

Mike now teaches on the programme. The first people to join this group are currently halfway through the first year of the two-year pilot programme. Pat, who is now the programme's convenor, is applying on behalf of the University to the ILT for accreditation of this programme.

The ILT is currently offering a fast-track route to membership for experienced university teachers (who have been teaching for at least three years). At present, and until the end of the next academic year, membership may be attained by the submission of an application in the form of a portfolio with accompanying references. The University is keen to encourage membership of the Institute and will pay the cost of an application from central funds.

Full details of the ILT's remit and activities can be found on its website at http://www.ilt.ac.uk.
