Language Institute plans to celebrate the Year of European Languages in style

Sue Sheerin
Director, Sussex Language Institute

As the saying goes ... do you want the bad news first, or the good news first?

The bad news is that the Open Access Centre of the Language Institute will be closed during the Autumn Term.

The good news, however, is that the Centre is being refurbished, rewired and re-cabled ready to receive 37 new multi-media digital computer and satellite TV workstations, 21 of which will be exclusively for self-directed language learning.

The remaining 16 workstations can be linked together to form a digital computerised language laboratory for teaching purposes, which will also be available for individual self-access work when the room is not required for teaching.

An additional room will be dedicated to self-directed learning and will be equipped with new analogue audio and video/satellite TV stations.

All in all, we plan to celebrate 2001 - the Year of European Languages - by opening the doors of our new state-of-the-art Open Access Language Centre at the start of the Spring Term.

During the Autumn Term, individual tutors are making arrangements for limited temporary self-directed learning facilities, so do ask your tutor about this if you are taking a language course of any description.

In the meantime, we apologise for any inconvenience caused, and look forward to welcoming staff, students and the public in January.
