Eric Laithwaite

Eric Laithwaite, Visiting Professor in the School of Engineering for the past ten years, died of a heart attack last Thursday 27 November, in the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Professor Laithwaite had just won a large ($1 million) contract from NASA which will be used to implement his research on levitation using linear induction motors for the purpose of launching satellites and shuttles into outer space, something he has been trying to persuade NASA to do for the past 20 years. Eric was known internationally for his work on linear motors and gyroscopes and the world of electrical engineering has lost one of its most colourful characters. He will be sadly missed by colleagues at Sussex and his many friends around the world.
