Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to :
1. show a basic understanding of the range of ways in which society has been conceptualised in Western thought, and the associated conceptions of the state and of humanity;
2. think more clearly about the taken-for-granted ways in which they themselves conceptualise society, the state and humanity, and the ways in which these conceptualisations fit together into overall patterns;
3. discern such underlying conceptions in historical and contemporary texts;
4. demonstrate skills in conceptual analysis, reasoning and argument.
