Acting on Principle Workshop 2013

Onora O'Neill

Themes from Onora O’Neill
Workshop at the University of Sussex
13-14 December 2013

The Philosophy Department at Sussex will be hosting this two-day workshop on the work of Onora O’Neill, to celebrate the re-publication of her first book, Acting on Principle

Onora O’Neill’s work provides the best possible example of the most theoretical philosophy being applied to themes of contemporary importance, and being used to raise deep moral questions which might otherwise have gone unnoticed.  Her theoretical concerns with Kantian ethics are always visible even when the topic is one of practical and everyday concern, although they never obstruct the clarity of her thought and writing, or the intuitiveness of her practical points.  Her work has been inspirational in all the fields in which she has been active.

The workshop will focus on four fields in particular: Kantian ethics; justice and political philosophy; bioethics; and trust in finance.  The aim is to concentrate thought on issues and problems which Onora O’Neill has brought out in each of these fields, in order to reflect on, and continue from, her distinctive way of thinking about them.

The workshop is generously supported by the Mind Association and the Aristotelian Society.
