In any proposed use of the University's name the College agrees to co-operate with the guidelines outlined below:
University title
In the context of the Government's response (February 1998) to the recommendations of the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education concerning the use (and misuse) of university titles, the Council of the University of Sussex has agreed that only those institutions offering whole programmes leading to first or higher degrees of the University may use the term, 'a college affiliated to the University of Sussex'.
The Council has approved the following guidelines for all partner institutions on the use of the University's name and related matters:
- Any use of the name of the University of Sussex or (for affiliated institutions) of the title, 'a college affiliated to the University of Sussex', requires explicit permission from the University. All requests for such permission should be directed to the Assistant Registrar at the University's Partnership Office. Requests should normally be made in writing and permission will be given in writing, although preliminary checks may be made by telephone.
- Staff in partner institutions must take care in communicating with students or potential students not to state or imply commitments which have not been agreed with the University; and they should not claim to speak for or on behalf of the University unless they have been explicitly authorised to do so. If in doubt, staff should check the position with the Assistant Registrar at the University's Partnership Office.
- All promotional material for joint and validated programmes is subject to University editorial checks, according to procedures which mirror the University's own internal practices for verifying accuracy of content in publications. All such promotional material must be referred at the proof stage to the Assistant Registrar at the University's Partnership Office. It will be passed to the Publications Officer who will be responsible for carrying out a general check of the content and the claims contained in it and for referring entries on course/programme content to the Registry for a detailed check against approved curriculum proposals. Clearance of the material or, where necessary, an indication of changes required will be conveyed to the affiliated institution in writing.
