University sports bursaries help students go for gold

Five students have been presented with University of Sussex sports bursaries to help them go for gold.
The bursaries are offered annually to Sussex sports men and women who are of an international, national or high county standard.
The support package includes free use of University sports facilities; fitness testing and programming; physiotherapy/sports massage; a parking permit; a financial package; and regular mentoring sessions.
The bursaries were presented by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, at a recent awards evening.
The recipients are:
- Emily Llewellyn (SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research) - Eventing
Emily represents Great Britain in eventing at pony and junior level. She is Junior National Champion 2007 and Young Rider National Champion 2007. She also won the individual bronze and team gold at the 2007 European Junior Championships. Emily's aim is to be selected for the Young Rider Team and to win individual and team medals at the European championships. In the long-term, Emily's ambition is to win medals at the 2012 Olympics.
- Miles Gandolfi (Medical School) - Fencing
Miles is ranked fifth in the Great Britain under 20s and was third in the British under 18s. Highlights of his career so far include being a member of the Great Britain junior fencing squad and competing in countries such as Switzerland, Sweden and Italy. He is looking forward to a busy competition schedule in 2008, including fixtures for the University, student sports body BUSA and the Welsh Open.
- Todd Leckie (Medical School) - Trialthlon
Todd currently competes in the under-23 age group and last year was ranked in the top five in Great Britain. His best result was 14th in the London Triathlon Elite Race. He has represented Great Britain as a junior at both the European Triathlon and Duathlon Championships. Todd's aim next year is to qualify for the U23 World Championships in Vancouver. He has also set his sights on winning the BUSA triathlon championships and on medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
- Richard Harris (Product Design) - Ultimate Frisbee
Richard is a member of the Great Britain mixed squad. Sporting highlights so far include winning the 2007 club nationals and club Europeans with his London team Clapham Ultimate. Another was winning gold at the 2007 European Championships with Great Britain. Next year Richard will be participating in the Club Nationals as well as going to Vancouver for the World Championships with Great Britain in August.
- Holly Wick (Philosophy) - Eventing
Holly is a national-level three-day eventer. She was the under 18 British champion in 2004 and won the team bronze medal at the Junior European Championships. She recently qualified to take part at the horse trials at Badminton, which is the biggest competition in the world for three-day eventing and a lifetime dream come true for Holly. Next on her list is the Olympics.
