The essential selection for thousands of undergraduates

More than 2,300 new students are discovering just what makes the University of Sussex one of the country's most popular places to study.

Undergraduates descended on the Falmer campus for the official start of the academic year and a whole programme of events dedicated to new students. This year's Welcome Weekend on 23rd September kicked off Freshers' Week on 25th September, co-ordinated by staff in Student Recruitment Services. Contributions have come from departments across the University as well as the University of Sussex Students' Union (USSU) which is planning events throughout Freshers' Fortnight, running until Friday 6th October.

Tanya Shadrick, Head of Student Recruitment Services, says: "There is a real buzz on campus in the lead up to Welcome Weekend and Freshers' Week as staff from every academic department work hard to put the finishing touches on their parts of the overall Induction Programme.

"So many of us have been students ourselves or have sons and daughters who are about to head off for university, so we all get something out of laying on a big welcome."

Highlights during Freshers' Fortnight include:

  • The Freshers' Fair on Wednesday 27th September at Falmer House featuring information stands from dozens of University groups and associations.

  • The Big Chill Out on Thursday 28th September offering tables of healthy alternatives and a farmer's market between 11am and 4pm on the Park Village grass.

  • The Freshers' Ball on Friday 29th September featuring live music and DJs between 9.30pm to 2am.

  • The University Induction Dash around the campus in fancy dress at 1pm on Friday 6th October.

  • Fireworks outside the Gardner Arts Centre from 7.30pm on Friday 6th October.

Dan Glass, USSU President says: "We are really excited to welcome all new students to our Freshers Week, which we hope will be a great introduction to union life. We're putting on a huge range of events, in anticipation of a year of eclectic entertainment to suit every interest."

This year's intake of students earned their place ahead of more than 17,500 people all applying to study with the University of Sussex in 2006-7. They include undergraduates from Europe, the USA and Canada. The University was named among the world's top 100 universities for the third year running earlier this months and scored among the top 20 places to study in the UK according to three separate annual league tables.

A global poll by American magazine Newsweek placed Sussex 14th in the UK and among the top 100 in the world. For the third year running Sussex was ranked joint 12th in the UK and among the top 150 in the world by the Institute of Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong. The University was also ranked 20th in the UK and 100th in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement.
