University of Sussex Media Release.
. Lord Attenborough to Open Falmer Sports Complex

10 March 1999
for immediate release

The Chancellor of the University of Sussex, Richard Attenborough, will officially open the Falmer Sports Complex at 10.15 am on Friday 19th March, following a major improvement programme.

The Sports Complex now boasts even better facilities for the University and the local community.

The £1M project has been supported by awards of over £500,000 from the Sport England administered Sports Fund and £75,000 from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. Without the generous contribution from these bodies, this exciting project would not have been possible.

The refurbished complex includes the new floodlit artificial turf pitch, fitness suite and changing rooms. The new pitch, which came on stream earlier than the other facilities, is already proving a big hit with University teams and the twelve local sports clubs already using it on a regular basis.

The Falmer Sports Complex is also the training base for Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club.

"This is an excellent example of how the Lottery Sports Fund can assist both educational institutions and local communities," says Jack Wilkinson, a Senior Development Officer with Sport England. "The Lottery Sports Fund is all about getting more local people involved with sport and providing quality facilities in which to take part - just what this project will do."

"The Falmer Complex offers better sport and exercise facilities than ever before, for the benefit of both the University and the local community. We are very grateful to the Lottery Sports Fund and the Foundation for Sport and the Arts for making it possible," says the University's Business Manager Charles Dudley.

You are invited to send a photographer and/or reporter to cover the opening ceremony.
