  • Botswana’s President to give lecture at Sussex

    President Festus Mogae of Botswana

    President Festus Mogae of Botswana

The President of Botswana, His Excellency Festus Mogae, is to visit the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and the University of Sussex, where he once studied, on Monday 21 February.

President Mogae, who studied development economics at Sussex as a postgraduate from 1969 to 1970, is on an official visit to the UK. He was invited by IDS to come to Sussex to meet development researchers and give a public lecture.

President Mogae's lecture, entitled Botswana's Development Experience, will take place at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School lecture theatre. University of Sussex Vice-Chancellor Professor Alasdair Smith will introduce and chair the lecture.

Elected President of Botswana in 1998, Festus Mogae has also served as Vice-President and Minister of Finance and Development in government, and is a member of the Botswana Democratic Party. His career to date has also included terms of service with the International Monetary Fund, the African Development Bank and the World Bank.

Botswana is recognised as the most stable democracy in sub-Saharan Africa and one of Africa's most striking "success stories". Its mineral wealth has made it, in African terms, a relatively wealthy economy. However, its population has been ravaged by HIV and AIDS in recent years. This has led to some groundbreaking initiatives, including the region's first antiretroviral drugs programme and universal free access to medicines.

In his lecture, President Mogae will reflect on the factors that have made Botswana relatively prosperous and ask what lessons can be learnt for other parts of the continent.
