. Lord Attenborough to be installed as University Chancellor

21 January l999
For immediate release

Lord Attenborough will be installed as the Chancellor of the University of Sussex at a special ceremony to be held at the Gardner Arts Centre next Thursday (28 January). Lord Attenborough will be the fourth Chancellor of the University, which was founded in l961. He succeeds the Duke of Richmond and Gordon.

Lord Attenborough has been closely associated with the University of Sussex for over thirty years. His first contact with the University was in l967 when he arranged for undergraduates to take part in his film, Oh, What a Lovely War! which was set in Brighton. He was elected Pro-Chancellor in l970 and since that time has been a supportive and very active participant in the life of the University.

The Installation of a new Chancellor is a milestone in the history of the University and although a formal ceremony it is also an occasion of celebration. It will also be a family occasion. Lord Attenborough will be joined at the ceremony by his wife, Sheila, and their three children Michael, Charlotte and Jane. The ceremony marks a return to Sussex for Jane and Michael - they were both students at Sussex in the l970s.

The Congregation for the Installation of the Chancellor will begin at ll.15. Following an address by the Vice-Chancellor and the President of the Students’ Union, the Vice-Chancellor will install Lord Attenborough as Chancellor. Lord Attenborough will then confer honorary degrees on three distinguished graduands whom he has nominated for recognition. They are: writer and director Bryan Forbes, educationist Michael Stern and actor Sir Ian Holm.

Music at the ceremony will be provided by the University of Sussex Chamber Orchestra and the Trinity College of Music Brass Ensemble. Sir Ian Holm will read an extract from Troilus and Cressida and both Michael Stern and Lord Attenborough will address the Congregation.

You are invited to send a reporter/photographer to the ceremony which will be held at ll.15 on Thursday 28 January in the Gardner Arts Centre at the University of Sussex.
