Nobel laureate returns to Sussex for graduation honour

More than 500 students, together with their friends and families, will gather at the Brighton Dome for the University of Sussex winter graduation ceremonies this week.

The degrees, diplomas and certificates will be conferred by the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alasdair Smith, at two ceremonies on Friday 20 February, beginning at 10.15am and 3.15pm.

Honorary degrees this year are to be awarded to three men whose work is of international significance in their specialist fields.

Professor Anthony Leggett, a former University of Sussex professor who received the Nobel Prize for physics last year, will become a Doctor of Science.

He said:  "I feel very privileged to be receiving this honorary degree. The work that helped me gain the Nobel Prize in 2003 was done while I was a Sussex faculty member and I think the relaxed atmosphere of the department contributed to my research.  I am looking forward to catching up with some of my old colleagues and students."

Mr Suma Chakrabarti, Permanent Secretary for the Department for International Development, will become a Doctor of Laws.

Professor Peter Sellars, professor of world arts and cultures at the University of California, will become a Doctor of Music.

Also collecting awards will be 73-year-old retired chartered accountant Ron Baskin, who will receive a Master of Science degree in experimental particle physics, and Clair Barber, 34, who combined having a family with completing her doctorate, entitled Shakespeare in Cyberspace.
