Brighton and Sussex Medical School is the number one choice for students

Places at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) are among the most sought-after in the country with more than 14 applicants for every place on its five-year programme to become a doctor.

Last year 997 people applied for one of the 128 places but this year that figure has almost doubled.

Now the applicants, who include local students and those from as far afield as Edinburgh, will go through the BSMS admissions procedure.

This begins with all applications being reviewed by senior faculty members before a large selection are invited to interview.

At the interview students meet an admissions panel, comprising a member of the BSMS staff, a local GP and another healthcare professional such as a nurse or junior doctor.

BSMS interview panels focus on ensuring the student has the right personality as well as on their attitude to medicine.

Dr John Kay, Admissions Tutor explained: "We work really hard to find students who have not only demonstrated academic excellence, but also are committed to caring for others, work well as a team, appreciate others' points of view and have the potential to accept responsibility and communicate effectively."

This refreshing interview stance received much praise and appreciation from the first-ever BSMS intake who started last October.

Hazera Begum, from St Albans, Hertfordshire was impressed with her interview: "The interview day and the interview itself was really warm and welcoming compared to all my other interviews - we were really treated as individuals."

Prof. Jon Cohen, Dean of BSMS, added: "I am very proud of all our first intake of students for their progress on the course. Not only are they well on their way to completing their first year but they have also all passed their first term exams.

"It is also a tremendous achievement to have had one of the highest increases in applications for medical school places in the country. Students tell us that they are attracted by the small size of the class, the friendly and supportive atmosphere, the modern and innovative curriculum and the brand new facilities.  This is our first year as a medical school but already we are establishing BSMS as a first choice place to study medicine."
