University of Sussex provides advice to students and staff on meningitis

Students and staff at the University of Sussex are being given precautionary advice about the symptoms of meningococcal disease, following two probable cases in students admitted to hospital this week.

The two cases are currently thought to be unrelated and the risk of a further case occurring is very small. In accordance with normal practice, their close household contacts have already been identified and given antibiotics.

In line with national guidance and in consultation with the Health Protection Agency, students and staff are being reminded about symptoms, and how to obtain further information and advice from NHS Direct, and other medical helplines and websites. There is no action that students or staff need to take if they are well.

Students at Sussex already have very high levels of awareness about the disease, due to active information campaigns over recent years by the University. Most students will have been offered vaccination against the C strain of the disease by the time they arrive at university, and Sussex reminds new students about the opportunity for vaccination on campus.
