A glowing memorial for World AIDS Day

Students and staff will build a giant red ribbon of candlelight at the University of Sussex on World AIDS Day (Monday December 1 2003).

As daylight fades, candles will be placed near the library to form a glowing ribbon, the international symbol of World AIDS Day. The project is expected to draw hundreds of people during the late afternoon and early evening. It is organised by Unisex, the University's sexual health project for staff and students.

Amy Leftwich, Unisex co-ordinator, said: "Five people worldwide die of AIDS every minute of every day. HIV has infected more than 42 million men, women and children around the world, five million in the last year alone. In the UK, numbers of people with HIV are rising. It is important to remember those who live with HIV and have died from AIDS. The candlelight ribbon is a tranquil and unifying way for everyone at the university to take part in World AIDS Day."

Candle bearers will visit the ribbon from 3pm. It will take a couple of hours for the pattern to be fully formed, marking a vivid trail across the Library Square.

Additional on campus activity for World AIDS Day includes daytime advice stalls run by Unisex and the Stop AIDS Campaign.

Unisex is also joining forces with Project V and @ctive Student to host a fundraising cabaret night on Saturday November 29th. The Action for Life cabaret  is being held at the Sallis Benney Theatre, University of Brighton.
