Students meet their new AMEX boss

Students who are about to embark on a new Masters degree at the University of Sussex also met their new employer, the executive vice-president of American Express, at a special opening on campus.

Glen Salow flew to the UK from New York to open the new American Express technologies facility at the University's Innovation Centre and was joined by 30 students who have been taken on the first information technology programme.

The new scheme means students will have the chance to develop their career potential by working part-time for American Express, whilst also studying for a Masters degree in either Information Technology for E-Commerce, or Human Centred Computer Systems. The courses begins in October and will offer students advanced learning, under the tutorage of leading academics in the IT field. In addition, the graduates will earn a competitive annual salary* and gain commercial experience from working with American Express' senior staff on a number of work assignments and research projects in the IT field.

Glen Salow said it was an an honour to have been asked to open the new American Express Technologies Development Centre and to mark the official launch of the new course. "The new MSc offers an unrivalled package of part-time postgraduate study combined with unique hands-on experience in IT in the financial services sector," he said. We hope that the experience of working for American Express will help these students immensely in their future careers."

The scheme forms part of American Express' ongoing commitment to attract the best IT talent to the company- there are plans to offer a number of permanent positions to students once they have graduated from the two-year course.

"The University is delighted to be working with American Express on this ground-breaking partnership", says Professor Alasdair Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex. "I am particularly pleased that American Express found that we offered them an unrivalled range of graduate programmes in a strong research-based computer science department".
