Minister for Europe visits Sussex European Institute

Denis MacShane, the Minister for Europe, will visit the Sussex European Institute at the University of Sussex on Tuesday 9 September.

The visit is part of the minister's country-wide tour to promote the benefits of the enlargement of the European Union next year. On 1 May 2004, 10 new member states will join the European Union. They are Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The Sussex European Institute (SEI) celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2002. During the past ten years it has served as the focal point for postgraduate training and research in contemporary European studies at the University of Sussex. Nearly 600 students from 50 countries have completed postgraduate courses at SEI since it was formed.

The minister will be meeting students and discussing issues such as the growth of EU member states, the impact of immigration policies in Europe and the work of SEI on continuing education in Central and Eastern Europe.

Professor Yorg Monar, co-director of SEI, said he was honoured that the minister had chosen to visit the institute. "We see this as recognition of the work SEI has done during the past ten years on issues of EU enlargement. It will provide our post-graduate students with an opportunity to have an exchange of views on these issues."
