Award winner shows other adult learners the way

Chrissy Stubley, a student at the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) at the University of Sussex, has won an Adult Learner of the Year Award.

"I first took a course about five years ago during a very low period in my life but struggled through it and gained some satisfaction," says Chrissy, who will receive her award from the Mayor of Brighton & Hove at a ceremony on Wednesday 14 May at City College.

"Not only did I gain recognition by way of credits, but also an enthusiastic and encouraging circle of fellow students of various ages and backgrounds."

River Jones, Chrissy's tutor, says: "Chrissy has produced some extraordinary creative work and has gained confidence in leaps and bounds. She has come a long way in three or four years."

Chrissy's advice to others who are considering returning to education is this: "Never believe the learning environment will be the same as the first time around. Time and people change as does the learning process."

As part of Adult Learners' Week (which runs from 10-16 May) CCE is holding an open evening from 5-8pm on 14 May in Bramber House on the university campus at Falmer. Potential students can meet with tutors and attend a free taster session.

CCE will also be at an exhibition of adult learning on Hove Lawns on 12 May from 10.30am-7pm.
