University unveils brand new welcome for brand new students

The academic year kicks off this weekend (28th and 29th September) as 3,300 undergraduates and postgraduates from all over the globe descend on the University of Sussex to begin their studies. Helping them to settle in, the University and Students' Union have launched their most ambitious and action-packed week ever to celebrate the new students' arrival.

Traditional events such as freshers' fair and freshers' ball remain but have been given a new look to suit the discerning students of 2002.

The revamped freshers' week came about after consultation with students. Shell Morgan, who has co-ordinated the overhaul, said: "Students want to be given enough time to settle in, register and find new friends before teaching begins. This new programme will have a mix of social, academic and welfare induction events designed to give freshers the best-possible welcome to Sussex."

As exciting as all these events will be, the University is well aware that many new students may need a bit of extra help during what can be a stressful time. Dr Mary Stuart, who oversees student matters, said: "University is a fantastic experience. Some people, however, take longer to settle in than others."

During freshers' week the Students' Union will be conducting talks on subjects such as living away from home and managing a budget. Students' Union Welfare Officer Marianne Lemond said: "It's OK not to be having the time of your life from day one, as it often takes a few weeks to feel comfortable. The important thing to remember is not to keep all these worries inside bottled up."

Marianne suggests keeping in touch with friends and family, joining a society to make new friends and seeking support from the various campus welfare services.
