Sign up now at Sussex for adult education courses

People are being encouraged to return to education as part of Sign Up Now week (2-8 September), a national campaign to encourage adult learning.

Two local women who have already returned to education are Susan Tyler and Georgina Rebera. Both are half way through studying part-time for a degree in Cultural Studies with the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) at the University of Sussex. However, three years ago when they started on a short community course, neither would have believed they could achieve so much.

"I thought degrees were something that happened to other people," says Georgina, 30, from Moulsecoomb, Brighton. "I left home at 16, started work and had a baby at 18. Studying at CCE has been a godsend."

Susan, 55, from Portslade, says, "Everybody has skills, but it's learning to recognise them that is important. Taking a CCE course means doing something for yourself and meeting other like minded people at the same time."

After finishing the degree, Georgina hopes to go on to fulfil her ambition of becoming a primary school teacher. Susan's studies have inspired her to volunteer at Brighton museum and art gallery and she comments, "All these doors are opening and I keep going through them. I wouldn't change anything."

CCE offers a wide variety of courses for adult learners designed to suit the diverse needs of those with work and other commitments. As Georgina herself advises, "Don't be daunted by your fears of studying - go for it!"

For more information, come along to the 'Sign Up To Learning' Information Desk next to Borders Bookshop in Churchill Square on Thursday 5th September from 10am-8pm, or contact CCE on 01273 678040 or email cce@sussex.ac.uk.
