New teachers get the best training in the region at the University of Sussex Institute of Education (USIE), an authoritative new survey reveals.
The latest league tables from the Teacher Training Agency place USIE ahead of other universities offering teacher training in the region such as Canterbury, Southampton, Brighton, Portsmouth and Chichester.
"This is an excellent result which confirms USIE's reputation in the region as a high quality provider of initial teacher education," says Dr Fiona Leach, director of USIE.
The figures also show that just 36% of trainee secondary school teachers are male, and only 13% at primary school level. The shortage of science and maths teachers is also becoming more acute - despite the offer of £4,000 'golden hello' payments.
