Sussex European Institute celebrates its 10th anniversary

The Sussex European Institute (SEI) at the University of Sussex celebrates its 10th anniversary with a series of conferences from 11-13 July.

More than 50 ex-students will be gathering for the conferences and a celebration dinner on Thursday evening. Three-quarters of SEI's students have come from outside the UK, and they have gone on to work in many different areas of European affairs.

Matt Browne, former aid to Jacques Delors and now Head of Research at the think tank Policy Network says, "SEI gives students the opportunity to network with policy-makers, European and international officials, and politicians. It gave me both the beginnings of a network of contacts, and the confidence to express my opinions within similar circles."

The Sussex European Institute is a research centre specialising in contemporary European issues which is internationally respected for its work.

Professor Leszek Balcerowicz, President of the National Bank of Poland, will be the keynote speaker at the conference. Other speakers include Professor Helen Wallace (Director, Robert Schuman Centre, Florence and Founder of SEI); Professor Wolfgang Wessels (University of Cologne and Chairman of the Trans-European Policy Studies Association); and Sir Stephen Wall (Head of European Secretariat, 10 Downing Street).

"The breadth of SEI's interests in Europe has been a great strength in the decade since the fall of the Berlin Wall," says University of Sussex Vice-Chancellor Professor Alasdair Smith.
