Work starts on new Medical School building

Work has started on a state-of the-art undergraduate teaching centre for the new Brighton and Sussex Medical School at the University of Sussex, the only new medical school in the South East of England.

A turf-cutting ceremony will take place on Wednesday 12 June at 12 noon on the site of the new £5.5million teaching centre at the University of Sussex. The three-storey building will feature a 250-seater lecture theatre, an anatomy teaching laboratory, eight seminar rooms, a computer suite and a café.

The University's Director of Estates, Tony Middleton, says: "We see this as a major step forward in the evolution of campus architecture, bringing it into the 21st century."

The ceremony will be attended by Professor Alasdair Smith and Sir David Watson, Vice-Chancellors of the Universities of Sussex and Brighton respectively, Professor Jon Cohen, Dean of the new Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Mike Hart, Managing Director of the main contractor for design and construction Willmott Dixon, Associate Deans Dr John Kay and Professor Richard Vincent, Medical School Secretary Peter Dennis and Dr Richard Gray, Principal Lecturer in Primary Care at the University of Brighton.

"I have been hugely impressed by the enthusiasm of everyone I have met who is involved with the project, and I am sure that the new school will succeed in producing great doctors," says Professor Cohen.

The Brighton and Sussex Medical School, which will have an annual intake of 128 trainee doctors, is a joint venture between the Universities of Sussex and Brighton. The £28.5million venture, which will be funded by the Department of Health and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), will create around 20 new consultant appointments as well as the equivalent of 20 full-time jobs in teaching.

There will be a presentation about the new medical school as part of the University of Sussex Summer Open Day on Tuesday 25 June from 11am to 12 noon in the Chichester Lecture Theatre. This is an open event and there is no need to book in advance.
