24 Hour Campus Rowathon

Five students and a staff member of the University of Sussex will dress up in silly costumes and row for 24 hours solidly on June 5/6 to raise money for their sports club.

The six members of the Sub Aqua club need to raise £7,000 to buy a new engine for their boat, and a re still looking for sponsorship. The Students' Union, who funds the society, decided they couldn't hand over that much cash in one go. So the club are raising it themselves with a 24-hour sponsored Rowathon.

Sally Hill, the University's Sex, Drugs and Alcohol project worker, is coordinating the Rowathon: "We had to be rescued by lifeguards three or four times because the engine on our boat kept breaking down. The last time we were rescued we interrupted the lifeguard's social and were rescued by four Elvis look-alikes. At that point we knew something had to be done!"

Each participant will row for fifteen minutes at time. When the quarter hour is up another member of the team will take over. The action begins at 5pm on Wednesday June 5 outside Falmer Bar and then moves indoors to Mandela Hall, Falmer House overnight. The boys in the team will dress as ladies, and the women will wear flippers rather than shoes.

Sally is a trained first aider and will be able to deal with aches and cramps during the marathon row. Asked about how the team will avoid boredom Sally said: "Watching the World Cup, playing bored games and eating." Sally is sure the team will be able to complete the Rowathon, adding: "We have the determination to do this, especially as we don't want to get rescued by a bunch of Elvis impersonators again!"

The team is still looking for sponsorship. If you would like to donate a few pounds please email Sally Hill on s.l.hill@sussex.ac.uk.
