CONFERENCE ON UNIVERSITIES' ROLE IN DEVELOPING LOCAL REGION

Universities have a huge economic impact in their region. They employ large numbers of people and purchase a substantial volume of goods and services from the region. A conference to be held at the University of Sussex on Thursday 7 May will examine the role universities in Sussex and in France are playing in the economic regeneration of the region and what strategies they each have to contribute to regional economic development.

The Conference Regional Strategies for Innovation will bring together key universities in the Rives-Manche transfrontier, the Somme, Seine Maritime and East Sussex to discuss the role that higher education can play in the economic regeneration of the region.

The Universities of Sussex, Brighton, Picardie Jules Verne, Rouen and Le Havre will present an aspect of their regional role and the respective Chambers of Commerce will reciprocate by discussing their expectations of their universities, giving examples of co-operation.

The Conference will be held from 9.30 am on Thursday 7 May in the Terrace Room at the University of Sussex. For further information contact Sue Yates, Information Officer, University of Sussex, Tel. 01273 678384, Fax 01273 678335, email s.m.yates@sussex.ac.uk

Note for Editors:
The conference is for local key players who are committed to the regeneration of their region and to the pursuit of a regional strategy in order to achieve this. It will provide possibilities for strengthening existing networks and developing new ones, particularly within the context of the EU INTERREG programme for regional development.

The event is being sponsored by the European Community Regional Development funds via the INTERREG programme.
