Winter Graduation Ceremonies 2002

More than 550 students, together with their friends and families, will gather at the Corn Exchange in Brighton for the University of Sussex Winter Graduation Ceremonies this week.

The degrees, diplomas and certificates will be conferred by the University's chancellor Lord Attenborough at three ceremonies on Thursday, February 21, beginning at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm.

Among those attending the ceremonies will be 81-year-old Mary Davies, who will receive a Master of Arts in creative writing, and 58-year-old Bruce Byrne, who completed a Master of Laws (LLM) just before undergoing major heart surgery.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Sussex European Institute (SEI) at the University, honorary Doctor of Laws degrees will be awarded to three people who have contributed greatly to our understanding of international relations. They are:

  • Professor Helen Wallace, founding director of SEI, who has advised national governments, the EU Commission and the European Parliament on policy design and effectiveness.
  • The Rt Hon the Lord Cockfield, a member of the House of Lords and a Privy Counsellor. He is also a former vice-president of the European Commission.
  • Professor Joseph Weiler, European Union Jean Monnet Professor at New York University School of Law, who served on the European Parliament and co-drafted the European Parliament's Declaration of Human Rights and Freedoms.

An honorary Doctor of the University degree will also be awarded to Lis Solkhon, a former singer and broadcaster, who has been an influential member of the community life of Brighton and Hove. She was a Brighton Councillor for 14 years, served on the University of Sussex Council and was the first chairman of the board of the Gardner Arts Centre. She now writes a weekly column for The Argus newspaper.

University of Sussex Alumni Fellowship Awards will be presented this year to BBC2 Controller, Jane Root, for her special achievements in broadcasting, and John Sander, currently project manager of the University's Employability Skills Unit. Mr Sander is credited with setting up the UK's first student employment unit, a model subsequently adopted by many other universities.
