Sussex graduate Ian McEwan on Booker Prize shortlist
University of Sussex graduate Ian McEwan has made the Booker Prize shortlist for his novel Atonement, his ninth novel, and his first since the Booker Prize-winning Amsterdam in 1998.
Atonement is described by publisher Jonathan Cape as "a depiction of childhood, love and war, England and class, at its centre a profound - and profoundly moving - exploration of shame and forgiveness, of atonement and the difficulty of absolution."
The other novels on the shortlist are:
- Peter Carey - True History of the Kelly Gang
- Andrew Miller - Oxygen
- David Mitchell - Number9Dream
- Rachel Seiffert - The Dark Room
- Ali Smith - Hotel World
Ian McEwan is currently the bookies' joint favourite with Peter Carey to win the £21,000 Booker Prize, which is awarded to the best full-length novel of the year. The winner will be announced on 17 October at the Guildhall in London.
Ian McEwan studied English at the University of Sussex between 1967 and 1970. He was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Sussex in March 1989.
