Glynn Jones to receive honorary degree at summer graduation ceremony

A record 1,700 students will be collecting their degrees, diplomas and certificates from the University of Sussex's Chancellor, Lord Attenborough, at this year's summer graduation ceremonies on Tuesday, July 17, at the Brighton Centre.

Among those receiving honorary degrees this year is Glynn Jones, chief executive of Brighton and Hove City Council, who will become Doctor of the University. Mr Jones, who was nominated for the award in recognition of his work in the campaign to achieve city status for Brighton and Hove, said: "I am both delighted and honoured that the University of Sussex has decided to award me an honorary doctorate.

"Since I came to Brighton in 1989, I have been a member of the court and council of the University of Sussex, and have worked closely with each of its vice-chancellors. The former Brighton Borough Council was instrumental in the creation of the Sussex Innovation Centre, which has been an unqualified success in encouraging and nurturing many brilliant young research graduates who would otherwise have had to leave the area to continue their work.

"I regard the award of an honorary degree as being as much in recognition of the work of the Council, apart from my own contribution, and I am, therefore, delighted and proud to be honoured in such a way."
