Schoolgirls study engineering at the University of Sussex

Girls from schools in Hampshire will spend a week at the University of Sussex in Brighton on a scheme to encourage them to consider engineering as a career.

"The idea is to give the girls a taste of university life and for them to undertake a range of activities designed to promote interest in engineering as a future career," says organiser Dr Helen Prance from the University's School of Engineering and Information Technology.

The residential course runs from 16 to 20 July and will include lectures, work on electronic circuits, multi-media work in the new Media Technology Lab, and visits to local scientific sites and exhibitions.

The course is funded by the Trident Trust, a charity based in Eastleigh which promotes work experience and citizenship skills for secondary school pupils.

The 26 girls, all aged 15 to 16 and in Year 10, will be attending from the following schools:

  • Crestwood Community School, Eastleigh
  • Warblington Secondary School, Havant
  • The Mountbatten School, Romsey
  • Wyvern Community Technology College, Eastleigh
  • The Romsey School
