University of Sussex Media Release.
. Psychology and the rest of the world

6 November 2000
For immediate release

Most social psychology research has been conducted in just a few countries with students as the key source of information. What can be learned by extending these types of study to other populations and other parts of the world?

'Social Psychology in a Multicultural World' is the title of University of Sussex social psychologist Professor Peter B Smith's public lecture on Tuesday, November 14.

Prof Smith, who is the author of six books, including Social Psychology Across Cultures (with Michael Bond) and more than 100 other publications, has a long-standing interest in broadening the focus of social psychological studies. A key interest has been in comparing cultural variations in approaches to leadership, initially in Japan and China. Subsequently, he has developed a broad network of researchers who have collaborated in surveys in more than 50 nations and has made cross-cultural studies of values, conformity, national identity, handling of disagreements, gender roles and communication.

He is currently editor of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology and is President-Elect of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology.
