Matthew's travels brought him to medical school

Matthew Williams

Matthew Williams, 36, from Eastbourne, worked as a travel advisor in London before embarking on a medical career.  After completing a degree in History, and working for several years in the travel industry he didn't see his future in it.  He therefore developed his long-term interest in medicine. His decision had its testing moments. "It took a while to get up to speed in studying again," he says."  But as a mature student, he has particularly enjoyed "the intellectual challenge".

His time at Brighton and Sussex Medical School has really made a difference: "My vocabulary has improved for one thing - but seriously - the whole experience has been very important as it has made me into a doctor!"

Matthew enjoyed the people at BSMS, having made lots of new friends. He also enjoyed the systems-based course, with significant clinical experience in the first two years preparing him well for the big step into the wards in the final three years.

Matthew will now be working at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, working in immunology, rheumatology and then surgery.
