Mother of four wins Adult Learner of the Year award

Moulsecoomb mother of four Georgina Rebera, who juggles work and family while studying for a degree, has won an Adult Learner of the Year Award.

Georgina, a student at the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) at the University of Sussex, is one of 12 people to receive a Brighton and Hove Adult Learner of the Year Award, awarded by Brighton and Hove City Council, in recognition of her achievements, and which will be presented by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove during Adult Learners' Week (15-21 May).

Georgina, who hopes to become a primary school teacher, is studying for a degree part-time, despite the demands of a busy home life and various work and voluntary commitments.

Georgina began studying with CCE on a community course five years ago. She says: "I thought degrees were something that happened to other people." However, having tackled a wide range of courses she progressed to a BA in Cultural Studies.

Georgina says: "I have gained a great deal of confidence as well as academic and valuable life skills. I have also inadvertently inspired friends to return to studying." Georgina is very active in her community in Moulsecoomb and has used the skills she has learned on her degree course to construct a website promoting the strong local community spirit.

Georgina is now keen to encourage other adults to study. She says: "Don't be daunted - go for it! The CCE tutors are supportive and get to know you personally - it is a community of learning."

CCE is the University of Sussex's specialist in part-time adult education, designed for people with busy lives. It is offering a range of Saturday taster sessions in June and will be holding an open evening, from 5pm-7pm on Wednesday, 12 May in Bramber House on the University campus at Falmer, when people will be able to talk to tutors and meet other mature students.
