University and Santander sign new three-year agreement
A new three-year agreement between the University of Sussex and global bank, Santander, was signed yesterday (Thursday 30 November), providing funding and support for many more Sussex students over the coming years.
Signing the agreement with Matt Hutnell, Director of Santander Universities UK, the University of Sussex Vice-Chancellor, Adam Tickell thanked the company for their long-standing partnership and support for Sussex students.
The agreement, which will be the third in succession, will see the continuation of a number of funds and scholarships designed to help students - both international and domestic - through their studies. Since 2011, when the first agreement was signed, over £500,000 worth of funding has been provided by Santander which has gone on to aid numerous students and researchers during that time.
Additionally, the agreement will continue to focus on the international exchange and mobility of students and researchers and will fund four scholarships of overseas students from the US, China, Brazil, Chile and Mexico – all part of the Santander network.
One student, who has been the recipient of the Santander Scholarship, spoke of how the help and support from Santander has been integral to her studies at Sussex. Adriana Ochoa Lagunas, who is studying for an MA in Development Studies, said:
“Santander have given me invaluable support in realising my capabilities and potentially changing the lives for many whose lives are affected by inequality by ensuring I can continue my studies.
“The support from Santander has been integral as, without their support, I wouldn’t have the means to be able to be here at Sussex.”
Santander also supports the University’s Formula Student team with funding. Acting Head of the School of Engineering and Informatics, Professor Johnathon Bacon, talked about Santander’s sponsorship of the programme and how the funding from Santander helps the team to be engaged all year round in a hugely fulfilling educational experience – which includes driving their car around the Silverstone race track.
As well as providing sponsorship, Santander have supported students through internships and via entrepreneurial schemes.
