Welcome to Music at the University of Sussex

We are friendly, small Department with a supportive and positive atmosphere. We offer a unique range of programmes which combine theory and practice in innovative ways and which reflect our expertise in composition, analysis, opera and music theatre, electronic music, popular music, film music, and our shared interest in 20th Century and contemporary music.

In the most recent National Students Survey (2009), the most comprehensive analysis of student opinion, an astonishing 100 per cent of respondents declared themselves happy with their experience at the Sussex Music Department. Students singled out the quality of teaching at the Department, with 100 per cent agreeing that 'staff are good at explaining things', 'staff are enthusiastic about what they are teaching' and 'the course is intellectually stimulating'.

Our research has likewise received top marks. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008), 95 per cent of the research undertaken in the Department was rated of 'international quality' or above, with 65 per cent falling into the two top categories 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'.
