Change your registration?
Will you be studying off-campus ("fieldwork")?
If you plan to work at CERN or other off-campus establishment, you must inform the university so that your registration record can be amended. Complete the fieldwork application form. [ .pdf ]
Will you be writing up?
If you are approaching the end of your active research and are starting writing up, you can switch to 'Continuation' registration with annual fees of £245 (in 2012-13). Note that if you are registered on Continuation you have limited access to university facilities - primarily the library, computing service, and the careers service remain available to you. There is no formal entitlement to office or laboratory space. Download the application form here [ .pdf ].
Have you run out of time?
You cannot submit your thesis if you are no longer registered at Sussex. If you are approaching your 'End date' (also called your 'Maximum date'), you can request an Extension of your registration. Your 'End date' can be found on your Sussex Direct page under "Programme".
The 'End date' is normally three years after first registration for MPhil full-time students (four years part time) or four years after first registration for PhD full-time students (six years part time). If you have had periods of Intermission, the 'End date' will have been put back by the same amount of time.
Download the extension application form [ .pdf ]. You will need to specify a timetable for completion of your thesis and have the support of your supervisor.
Got problems and need a break to sort them out?
If you need a break from your studies for health, family or financial reasons you can apply for 'Intermission' (also called 'Temporary Withdrawal') for one, two or three terms. Only whole terms can be applied for, with the Summer Term regarded as running from May to September.
Overseas students: there may be visa restrictions and you should make an appointment to speak to an International Student Advisor before applying for Intermission.
If you are on a studentship from MPS, your bursary payments will stop while you are on intermission.
