The annual ‘Make it happen!’ careers fortnight on campus is set to be the biggest yet, featuring nearly 40 speakers - most of whom are Sussex graduates – at six themed events covering careers in different sectors.
The Careers & Employability Centre (CEC) expect up to 200 students to attend some sessions during the fortnight of alumni talks, skills-development workshops and recruitment presentations: booking particularly fast are ‘Careers in Media & Arts’ and ‘Careers in Development, Charities and Not for Profit’.
Some of the alumni speakers have particularly interesting career stories and their successes have been informed by previous events organized by the CEC.
Katie Davage, for example, first found out about Scientifica – a local scientific instrumentation manufacturer - at GradFair 2011. After graduating in 2012 with an Environmental Science degree, she attended the 2012 Careers Fair as a Scientifica employee and is now returning to Sussex to share her story with current students at the ‘Careers in Science’ session on 4 March.
Mark Kaye, who now works in communications for a development charity, was persuaded to speak at the 2011 ‘Careers in Development’ event after he had just completed his MA in Global Political Economy at Sussex and when he was unemployed. He had spoken beforehand to a careers adviser, who felt that his work experience and experiences of applying to development organisations (even though then unsuccessful) would be of great interest to current students.
Mark has now been successful in his job search and is returning to the event this year, in his new role as Emergency Information and Communications Officer at Save the Children UK. Hear Mark speak at ‘Careers in Development, Charities and Not for Profit’ on Tuesday (26 February).
Other sessions will look at career options in government and public services, research, psychology, and business and finance.
The fortnight of careers events will also include skills workshops; expert advice from employers; and networking opportunities.
‘Make it happen!’ will run over two weeks between Monday 25 February and Friday 8 March.
