A Sussex student is hoping for success at the polls this week.
Nearly 2,500 seats are being contested on Thursday (2 May) in 27 county councils and seven unitary authorities across England.
Matthew Quanstrom, who is standing in the Upperton ward in Eastbourne, has lived in the ward for most of his life and is currently in the third year of his Physics degree at Sussex.
Matthew, the youth and student officer for Eastbourne Labour party, says a county council that fights back against the cuts is needed and, if elected as a Labour councillor, he will try to gain investment in roads and pavements.
Meanwhile Jessica Sproxton-Miller, an administrative assistant in the Student Support Unit, is a Liberal Democrat candidate for Bramber Castle in the West Sussex County Council elections.
A previous member of Upper Beeding Parish Council, Jessica has lived in Small Dole for 17 years.
If she is elected on Thursday, Jessica wants to support the Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment to reduce the impact of cuts to services and to increase services for vulnerable adults (especially those with learning disabilities) and young people.
Jessica would also campaign for road and traffic improvements in the area, to help to reduce injuries to pedestrians, cyclists and damage to vehicles.
Polling stations will be open from 7am-10pm on Thursday and the election results will be announced in the early hours of Friday morning after the count.
