Department of Mathematics

Maths and Physics Society

AliInitiated by Dr Ali Taheri, senior lecturer in Mathematics, the MAPS Society is a newly-established society with the intention of bringing together students - UG, MSc, PhD - and staff from our two departments to form an even closer bond.

It is purely an academic society, in that its activities are entirely of an academic nature. At the heart of the society, there is special interest and emphasis on the promotion of Pure Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and the enhancement of student experience.

Some of the activities of the society are:

  • Colloquia - a series of bi-weekly talks given on different areas of Mathematics and Physics to an audience of u/g and p/g students to introduce them to various subjects without intending to go into very advanced or very
up-to-date research level material. The topics are chosen to complement the existing courses and to give students a broader vision and knowledge in Mathematics and Physics. Topics which are not part of the UG curriculum are of particular interest and emphasis.
  • Mathematics problems of the week - a collection of 4-5 mathematics problems are displayed on a posterboard in the foyer for interested students to attempt, as well as being posted on their blog/website http://theundefinedlimit.wordpress.com/. There is a committee of staff and students who collect/compile/design these problems on a weekly basis. Suggestions for new problems are very welcome.
  • Book of the week - each week there will be a specific Maths and a specific Physics book (not necessarily a
newly-published one) on display in the foyer. These are books whose level is accessible to both u/g and p/g students.
  • Poster competition - displayed in the foyer during the year, there will be various Mathematics and Physics posters by u/g and p/g students on contemporary subjects. All students are invited to take part in the event. At the end of the year a prize of £100 will be awarded for the best Maths and best Physics posters.
  • Blog - a blog has been created to enable interested staff and students to exchange ideas, discuss and debate on topics, including the problems of the week, and matters related to the colloquia and the posters http://theundefinedlimit.wordpress.com/.
