Potential careers for Maths students
Maths affects everything we do in our lives. It forms the basis for many other subjects and is fascinating in its own right. It also leads on to a variety of fulfilling careers.
The table below illustrates that there are very few jobs that a mathematics graduate can't do. This is a definite advantage but can also cause cxonfusion and can make it difficiult to choose and commit to a career. Studying mathematics equips you with skills that are useful in most areas, even if these do not use mathematics in an obvious or explicit way.
Making a career choice is not easy. You should make an informed decision and use the available resources (careers services, career tutor, internet, friends, family etc.) to first create an accurate picture of what the possible options are and pin down employers that are targeting mathematics graduates. Do not be put off if mathematics is not mentioned in a job title or job description, go beyong the rough description and enquire about what a particular job entails. Never say "...this has no maths in it ..." or "...they are not interested in a mathematician ..." or "how can a mathematician fit in or do this job ...".
Top Career choices of Sussex Mathematics Graduates include the Financial Sector, Teaching and Further Study. However, their choices are much broader with many examples listed in the table below (although long, the list below is not a complete list):
