Heat Transfer Applications (506H3)

15 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Spring teaching

On this module, you will be introduced to advanced topics related to heat transfer. You will learn how to apply this theory to the design of key engineering components that are relevant to a range of technologies.

Topics covered include:

  • heat transfer due to convection
  • heat transfer due to phase change (such as boiling and condensation)
  • heat exchangers and measurement techniques.

These topics will be explored within the context of sustainable energy technologies including power cycles, heat pumps and refrigeration systems.

Teaching

45%: Lecture
41%: Practical (Laboratory)
15%: Seminar

Assessment

100%: Coursework (Group presentation, Group submission (written), Report)

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 30 hours of contact time and about 120 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2020/21. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
