MA in Digital Media

This MA will provide you with the opportunity to combine theoretical and practical work and give you an excellent working knowledge of new media. You will be introduced to new media within the theoretical contexts of media and cultural studies and gain hands-on experience of designing and developing new media products using industry standard equipment and authoring tools.

The MA in Digital Media aims to provide a distinctive programme of high intellectual quality based on the teaching of theoretical, analytical and critical skills focussed on cultural and communicative activities in social, political, psychological, economic and creative life. The programme is designed to enable you to examine the media in their historical development, as social and economic institutions, technologies, and forms and within local, national and global contexts.  

The programme is also designed to develop your skills as a practitioner of digital media and to allow you to critically interrogate forms of digital media practice and to make connections with media practice and media theory.

Student profile

Our MA Digital Media may be attractive if you aim to work in:

  • Digital media / new media
  • Publishing / communications
  • TV, film or broadcasting
  • Public relations
  • Journalism
  • Research (or wish to pursue doctoral study)
  • Other professions where critical, analytical and presentational skills are important

Our MA Digital Media students come from all over the world, and have a background in many different disciplines or work experience. You will need:

  • Bachelor degree (equivalent to a UK 2:1 Hons) in a related area, e.g. humanities, social sciences or art and design, or
  • Bachelor degree in any subject (equivalent to a UK first class Hons)
  • IELTS 6.5 (with 6.5 in Writing and no other component below 6.0)
  • Interest in exploring the combination of theory and practice in new media

*Experience of digital media is an advantage, but not essential
